             abstract = "The main objective of this work was to compare the altimetry 
                         obtained from different sources of digital elevation models (DEMs) 
                         such as ASTER GDEM 1 e 2, SRTM and TOPODATA. The results were 
                         faced to the height values obtained from the altimetric network of 
                         the Brazilian Geodetic System. We also compare the spatial scale 
                         in which each model can be used. Our study area is located in 
                         Southern Brazil between 22° and 23°S and 45°0 and 46°30E. Our 
                         investigation was based on the National Cartographic Accuracy 
                         Pattern (PEC). Our results show that ASTER GDEM 1 and 2 as well as 
                         TOPODATA DEMs can be used at the 1:100.000 scale. Whereas SRTM 
                         data for 1:250.000 or higher. We demonstrate that DEMs should be 
                         performed in the proper scale avoiding their use in 
                         non-recommended working scales.",
